Everyone has the ritual that they follow when it comes to writing. It can vary from person to person. My rituals may not work for the next person and so on. Mine is as follows and can change if I find another method that works better or if a current part no longer works for me.
- A quiet place
I need to be in a quiet place. But not too quiet. A little bit of noise in the background isn’t as bad as I use it as something to keep me in check and focused. I have noticed that when I have chosen a silent place to do my writing, I have managed to drift off in my world and wasted time.
- Right mind frame
I need to be in the right frame of mind. Writing needs to be creative even if I am not writing a book. I need to be able to think freely and come up with creative thoughts. If I have a lot going on in my mind, I struggle to divert my mind to writing. I have tried to force myself to divert my mind to writing but it has not worked.
- Interest in the topic and a strong view
I need to have some sort of interest in the topic and I need to be able to relate to it. If I choose a topic which I am not interested then I am limited to what I can write about. I try to think of topics that I can relate to my life and add a personal touch to. Otherwise, I end up repeating myself and the writing is not of a good standard. If it is a topic which can be judgemental, I try to ensure I have a strong view on it and I can pack up my views with facts or points that have given me a strong view.
- Pen and Paper
Writing the blog post down on paper works for me the best. I brainstorm different points and then adding more details to build it up into a post. I have tried opening up a blank document on the laptop and tried writing, but that takes me a much longer time. I’m not sure if that is me or is what happens to a lot of other people too. So now I draft my post but hand on paper and then I type it up. By doing it this way, I can re-read the post and edit it along the way. I leave a day or two between the paper version and the online version to ensure I have a fresh and clear mind to be able to pick up any errors.
- Time
I always prefer writing when I have the time to write. I don’t like rushing my posts. Like anything rushed is never the best it is the same with writing. If I rush it then I end up writing content that is not good enough. Especially when I write it from my perspective it will show in my writing that it is rushed. With everything else going on in my life I do struggle to make the time which then means I have a big gap between my posts. I would like to improve on that and post more frequently so I will work on myself to ensure that happens.
- Post Topics
Sometimes, the post topic can be a barrier between writing and not writing. If I struggle to have a topic at hand then I can be difficult to start writing. My mind will want to be creative and write but I am not able to think of a topic. What I do is when I come across an interesting topic, I jot it down in my book so when I want to write, I can look through the list and choose a topic. I do like to write about different things so I do try to vary my posts from time to time. I love the days when I can put my pen to the paper and continuously write for a good 20 minutes. I stop when I have written as much as I can before I end up repeating myself. When I read back the post and it looks like a good one, it puts a smile on my face. If only it was that easy to write every single time. I do like those days and I hope those days do come round.
